Returning to Brisbane from a residency in Berlin at Tanzfabrik, Clare Dyson presents the Australian premier of Being There.

A visually stark but emotionally beautiful new work, this dance piece transcends the ordinary in every way. Set with dancers and original new text, the audience chooses where and how they witness this work; up close and personal or from a distance. This complex and emotionally charged new dance work is a collaboration with two of Queensland’s most stunning dancers, Emily Amisano and Trish Wood, a new presence in Queensland writing and an award winning team of lighting and set designers.

This new creation extends Dyson’s past work looking at how audiences interact with live performance and was created across two countries: as artist in residence at Tanzfabrik in Berlin, working in Brisbane at QUT and the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

Being There combines storytelling, dance and the intimacy of live performance. Centred around the tale of a woman alone in a foreign city, the work asks audience members to question the relationship between performer, performance and observer. What role do the emotions and histories of audience members have on the their experience of a work? Can a dancer have a bad day? And if so, does that affect the performance? Self-awareness and the separation between audience and performance are key issues explored in the work.

Clare Dyson is known for visually stunning dance works that meld the practices of movement, visual installation, light and audience. This work is a departure from her previous works in her collaboration with writer Siall Waterbright who adds her talent to the considerable skills of Dyson’s more established collaborators. Dancers Emily Amisano and Trish Wood also bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the work including their take on the ‘authentic dancer’ within an intimate performance setting that has been created by the lighting and set designers.

Clare has been commissioned by a range of companies and organisations, and has created over ten innovative independent performance works throughout Australia, including work at major Festivals. She has been an Australian Choreographic Centre Fellow, received an inaugural Emerging Choreographers Award, a Queens Trust Award and is currently the Artist In Residence at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane. In 2006 she was awarded the Anne and Rodney Pearlman Fellowship to create a new work at the Djerassi Residency Program in the US and was nominated for Best Choreography and won Best Independent Dance at the Australian Dance Awards. Her most recent work, ‘Medeleven’, a commission for Edith Cowan University, was just awarded a prestigious NDP Grant from the US in collaboration with DiverseWorks in Houston for a national tour in the US in 2008. Clare has been awarded the Cité Internationale des Arts Residency in Paris from the Australia Council where she will research audience engagement in Paris for three months.

Being There has had a showing at Tanzfabrik in August 2007 and this is the second stage of development at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in December 2007. This work will have a final development and presentation later in 2008.
