Nicole Canham and Phluxus Dance Collective present

chinese whispers/broken telephone

THURSDAY 1st NOVEMBER 8pm
CONTEMPORARY DANCE AND MUSIC

pst. Want to play chinese whispers?

Join us for one night only as ACT Creative Arts Fellow Nicole Canham, clarinet with Brisbane’s award winning Phluxus Dance collective create a world of music and movement investigating the familiar party game chinese whispers.

Music and movement morph into a game of gossip and abstraction. Classical clarinet, dance and electronica conjure a world based around communication breakdown and cumulative error. Familiar sounds and movements shift and change.

Will you pass on the message, or choose to distort it?

chinese whispers/broken telephone is a theatrical experiment, taking a familiar concept and looking at the different directions the game can take. A simple phrase becomes unrecognisable through accents, changes of pronunciation and interpretation. The music features warped Gershwin etudes, acoustic treatments of heavy metal anthems by Alchemist, minimalist masterpiece New York Counterpoint by Steve Reich and other works. The choreography explores common themes to the artform alongside the rules of the game – interpretation of an idea and the exploration of ways that we associate meaning to what we see and hear.

Blurring the boundaries between artforms - prepare to join in the experiment you’ll have to come to the show to find out how!
