On her first visit to Brisbane Esteemed musical performer, composer and songwriter from the UK:
Described as the "21st Century Piaf", Barb Jungr is unquestionably Britain's leading chanteuse and song stylist and has been a driving force in European cabaret for the last decade.
Featuring a distinctive vocal style, and best known as a famous interpreter of works but also much loved as a chansonnier, or singer of chansons – classic, lyric-driven French songs, and European songs in cabaret style. Critics have compared her to Nina Simone, Peggy Lee and Edith Piaf.
Barb was the first woman to win the UK's most prestigious Perrier Award, and has worked with artists as diverse as Julian Clary and Billy Bragg.
Barb distills interpretations of songs from artists like Bob Dylan, Ray Davies of The Kinks, Jaques Brel, Jimmy Reed, Carole King and Randy Newman, Eric Bibb and the songs of Elvis Presley. The songs in the show vary from sentimental to dramatic and highly emotional and also feature some exciting new self-penned material including the positive message of “Beautiful Life”.
Her passionate singing/song styling owes a debt to northern soul, jazz and opera – all music that informed her early years.
"One of the most mesmerizing shows you’re likely to see". The Edge New York
"... nothing less than sensational. She is, simply put, not one but two cuts above your typical cabaret artist. She has a killer voice, great acting chops, and a daring sense of the theatrical". Talk In Broadway New York
"Jungr has proved herself one of the most compelling interpreters around." Time Off New York
"Jungr is utterly original, with a profoundly committed style that teeters on the edge of emotional excess without tipping into self-indulgence. Jungr casts an unconventional spell, but her magic is real. Time Out new York
