60 minutes, six grim fairytale folk and one mid-career artist.
From nothing, comes something……… Up from under, it scratches and claws its way into being.
Underbelly is a fairytale of grotesques told through dance, movement and theatre. Political spin meets macabre mythology through the award-winning choreography of Brian Lucas, accompanied by the sumptuous design of Bruce Randall, with specially devised sound by Brett Collery and superb lighting by Morgan Randall.
Developed through Brian Lucas’ fellowship with the dance board of the Australia Council for the Arts, Underbelly was originally produced and presented by the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2006.
Underbelly was met with critical and popular acclaim leading to its nomination for the Australian Dance Award’s Best Achievement in Independent Dance 2006 and a recent performance at the prestigious Australian Choreographic Centre in Canberra.
Underbelly deals with the darkness that lurks beneath the shiny surface of political truth. Intricately structured as a tale within a tale, Brian Lucas weaves an allegory of the moral challenges in contemporary society by placing himself as a ‘story-teller’ in comic tandem with the politically powerful.
Underbelly is a Red Riding Hood pantomime told from the political pages of Australia’s press.
A work of rare achievement in both concept and rendering.
“A world of cheeky dark humour […] a captivating work.” The Australian.
“A shocker, in the very best sense. “ RealTime
