“Just when we thought everything possible with jazz piano trios had been done, this Melbourne trio’s debut album forces a rethink.” The Australian
The Ben Winkelman Trio is an innovative and dynamic contemporary jazz piano trio that draws on diverse influences, which range from Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music to stride piano and Jelly Roll Morton’s “Spanish tinge”. Playing compositions from their new album The Spanish Tinge, as well as their award nominated and critically acclaimed debut release, Stomps, Pieces & Variations, Ben Winkelman (piano), Sam Anning (bass) and Andrew Gander (drums) will traverse diverse interests ranging from stride piano through Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms to classical music and tango. The result is a dynamic and exciting meeting between the traditional and the innovative, with sublime balance between the structure of arrangements and the freedom of improvisation. Ben Winkelman was a semi-finalist in the 2006 National Jazz Awards. In 2006 the trio toured Australia to launch its debut CD, playing 22 gigs in one month all over the country, was featured on ABC TV’s Sunday Arts program, and appeared at some of the major national jazz festivals.
Offering a fresh take on the contemporary jazz piano trio, the Ben Winkelman Trio is refreshingly original and not to be missed. “Winkelman’s all-original music defies categorisation…” The Australian
The Contemporary Music Touring Program aims to give all Australians, wherever they live, better access to some of the country’s best live contemporary music. The Australian Government is proud to be associated with the Ben Winkelman Trio’s performances.
