THE SIREN’S KISS – A DEPARTURE IN GENRE FOR SWENSON

A cabaret style dramatised reading of award-winning playwright Sven Swenson’s new work, The Siren’s Kiss is a whodunit musical satire featuring an all-star-Brisbane- based cast.

This musical comedy noir, complete with costumes, singing and music by a hot, live 3 piece combo, is set in 1940’s Hollywood. The Siren’s Kiss takes a seedy, sexy, spoofy look at tabloid culture.

A commissioned work, The Siren’s Kiss is Swenson’s response to a brief requesting a work that, “should be funny and none-too-subtle, a send up of something people recognise…and risqué…” What could better fit the bill than the story of a love-jaded Californian ‘private dick’ and his sordid encounters with a blonde bombshell and a mysterious redhead?

Swenson has assembled an all-reading, all-singing, all-star cast, to be directed by Tony Auckland in his directorial return from the high-flying world of Kubler-Auckland Management. The production features Damien Garvey who recently played support to David Wenham in the ABC 2-part series, Answered by Fire. Other local luminaries include singer/actor Liz Buchanan, TV and theatre actor James Stewart, as well as Margi Brown Ash, Helen Howard and Jonathan Brand.

Sven Swenson’s career trajectory took off with the 1999 critically acclaimed, Queensland Theatre Company production of his play Vertigo. He was the recipient of the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award (2002) for his original work Road to the She Devil’s Salon.

Don’t miss this sultry, sordid, stripped-back, hilarious, smoking-gun or is that smoke ’n’ gun (?) new work, The Siren’s Kiss, a full-blown dramatised reading in cabaret mode at the Judy.
