Transcontinental, multi-media company Igneous present a visually sumptuous interactive event inspired by the lead performers’ experience of major limb paralysis and by the work of neurologist, V. Ramachandran.

“An act of bravery, a gift, a deep reflection on human re-creative capacity…” RealTime

In 2006 Mirage premiered in Canberra to high praise from the national press. Now it’s Brisbane’s turn to host this perception-shattering and visually stunning performance/installation by award-winning, Annerley-based multi-media company Igneous. Igneous have performed to critical acclaim in Australia, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, UK and India over the past decade.

In 1992 professional dancer James Cunningham was left with a paralysed left arm following an horrific motorcycle accident. Refusing to let his profession as a physical performer be destroyed, Cunningham sought radical therapy to reactivate his sensationless arm. Finally he found his answer in the ‘Mirror Box’, a simple device that generates a ‘body mirage’, allowing him to “perceive” movement in his paralysed arm and encouraging him to continue exploring the possibility of movement.

Mirage is a labyrinth of mirror games, performance and projections. Audiences can interact with mirror booths, come and go between two spaces, move around the installation during the performance and stay for both cycles of the 45-minute loop. The elaborate set includes a 6m wide, 2cm deep pool of water, five mirror booths and four video projectors. As unconventional as it is moving and visually beautiful, Mirage is a not-to-be-missed exploration into the cellular depths of body memory.
Mirage is a collaborative piece made by Brisbane artists: James Cunningham: performer, choreographer; Suzon Fuks: director, video artist; Alison Ross: set design; Andrew Kettle: sound artist; Morgan Randall: lighting designer.
