Following an awarded and applauded ‘work-in-progress’ season at The Age Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2006, young Brisbane dance collective Phluxus gears-up for a three-night season at the Judy.

Phluxus Dance Collective is an all-female collective of young and ambitious QUT alumni dance graduates; Chafia Brooks (24), Nerida Matthaei (25) and Skye Sewell (29).

The dance collective’s name, Phluxus, is derived from the genre of contemporary art made famous by the likes of Yoko Ono and others in the 1960s, which allowed its disciple-like artists to make art that challenged others.

Described by audiences as, “beautiful in its simplicity and intensity” and “wonderfully imaginative”, the machine that carries the soul delves into the world of the subconscious. In this dance theatre piece, three young women encounter the body's physical manifestations of emotional experience. As they move through a landscape rich in textures and sounds, the differing perspectives of their journey reveal three distinct and unique movement vocabularies.

the machine that carries the soul was awarded "Highly Commended" (runner up, Best Dance/Movement Performance) at The Age Melbourne Fringe Festival in September 2006.

Counting down the days to their debut at the Judy, performer Nerida Matthaei said the dancers are still very much ‘hands-on’, making a special “call-out” for help with props; eggshells to be exact. More than 15,000 washed eggshells will be used in their three-night season. Donations can be delivered to the Judith Wright Centre by Friday 22nd June.

The Judith Wright Centre will premiere Phluxus’ full-length work of the machine that carries the soul, opening on Tuesday 26 June.
