Next Thursday 12th of April, the Judy turns out the lights for one very special night.
Pitch Black.
TAYLOR DEUPREE. One of America's microsound pioneers and head of legendary art-eclectronica label 12k.
The surround sound experience is one usually associated with the cinema. Tonight, we turn out the lights and let the ears come to the foreground.
Transforming the Judith Wright Centre’s Performance Space into a surround sound environment, leading sound sculptors Taylor Deupree(USA),Uk leaf label recording artist QUA aka Cornel Wilczek and Lloyd Barrett + Joe Musgrove will explore the world of translucent sound, echoed melody and generous texture that's sure to transfix and transport those in attendance.
As the label head of 12k, one of America's leading electronic music labels, New York's Taylor Deupree has spearheaded a revolution of sorts. Creating a unique aesthetic that's equal parts melodic electronics, refined spatial sound, powerful DSP and a reflexive minimal art framework, 12k is now without question one of the key labels releasing new electronic music from the USA.
In his own work, Deupree fosters a sense of interplay between strictly digital sources and more organic qualities. His latest album Northern evokes a wonderful state of symbiosis, whereby his processing transforms the varied source materials (guitar, melodica etc) into warm digital washes and pulsing textures.
Deupree will be joined by Cornel Wilczek whose music represents an unrepentantly gorgeous and nostalgic mix of sunlit electronics and guitars, bouyed by complex arrangements and crafted by a gentle iconoclast - bringing to mind the playfulnes of Mouse on Mars, the sophistication of Ennio Morricone and the warm lush pops of Architecture in Helsinski.
QUA from Melbourne. His first-ever surround-sound show in Brisbane - now signed to anticon’s MUSH label (USA) and Leaf records (UK).
Taylor Deupree will also be joined onstage by local sound artists Lloyd Barrett and Joe Musgrove.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, it's arts funding and advisory body.
