November E-Newsletter

The joyous sounds of music flowed freely here at the Judy throughout October - another bountiful month down as we sail through the twilight of 2007 towards new cultural destinations and adventures in 2008. But wait, we’re not done yet!

Drawing the shutters on October:

Big Sound 2007, Brisbane’s annual contemporary music summit and showcase, sold out and struck a cord which continues to resonate. A fantastic vibe enveloped the Judith Wright Centre, a world of information and experience was shared through a series of stimulating key note speeches and one-on-one chats over coffee, and address books and palmcards strained to cope with new contacts and opportunities.

Emerge programs’ Voyages and Revelations was a beautiful and intimate concert program conjuring up images and sounds from across the globe, while Perfect Ten presented another set of 10 new 10 minute plays to strong and very receptive audiences. 10 out of 10!

The YAMP Showcase transformed our foyers and Theatre into “a happening’ – a vibrant splash of colour, sound and raw enthusiasm showcasing the work of young local emerging artists and artsworkers.

Local video popsters and Triple J high-climbers, Dumb Viva Disco, presented a crazy, weird and wonderfully entertaining spectacle, and Robert Bertram’s sold-out concert attracted phenomenal praise.

Contemporary orchestral music fussed with jazz, pop and blues created Exodus, a musical journey created by eight great new local musicians from QUT, and the Australian Dance Performance Institute’s Musical Theatre Showcase presented some of Broadway’s hottest hits in another sell out season.

Opening the curtains on a bright new November:

Billy The Rabbit - this Friday and Saturday night only. Join celebrated Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig drawing live on stage in a magical repartee with ARIA-award winner Gyan and her stellar band including the Cruel Sea’s James Cruickshank, Simon Greaves and McKenzie’s Theory’s Cleis Pearce. Together, they will bring to life the exquisite Billy The Rabbit - a book and CD collection of Leunig’s cartoons and poems and Gyan’s beautiful voice and music.

This Thursday, chinese whispers/broken telephone investigates the familiar party game of miss-understanding and twisted meaning. Gossip and communication breakdown is explored through movement by award-winning local Phluxus Dance Collective accompanied by ACT Creative Arts Fellow Nicole Canham, featuring the music of Gershwin, Reich, Harvey, Alchemist and others.

The iconic Ed Kuepper is joined by the Kowalski Collective this coming Sunday night to launch the new album Jean Lee and the Yellow Dog.

The emerge project’s Picnic Playreadings continues our series of developing new work for theatre. In a relaxed picnic atmosphere, see the creative process at work and participate in moving new theatre from page to stage.

Kooemba Jdarra proudly presents the premier of Fiona Doyle’s Whispers of this Wik Woman. This is a true story about a strong and determined woman, Fiona’s grandmother, from remote western Cape York and her teachings about love, willpower, purpose and loyalty to forebears and Country.

Exclusive Movie Offer for Judith Wright Centre members:

To celebrate the release of Peter Carstairs feature directorial debut, September, Hopscotch Films are giving Judith Wright Centre members the chance to attend an exclusive advance screening of the film at Palace Centro Cinemas on Monday 12th November at 6.30pm.

Set in the sweeping Western Australian wheat belt in 1968, September tells the story of two 16 year old boys, one black and one white, whose pure and unaffected friendship begins to fall apart under the pressures of a changing social and political climate. With a superb script, outstanding performances and luminous cinematography, September reveals the tumultuous human emotions beneath a segregated inequity in Australia’s recent past. September is a haunting and evocative film about the power of friendship.

To attend this exclusive advanced screening be one of the first 150 to RSVP to Marc on rsvp@hopscotchfilms.com.au with “JWC” in the subject line and your full name and postal address in the body of the email and a double pass will be posted to you. The screening will be filled on a first come, first served basis so be quick. Only winners will be notified.
