September E-Newsletter

Dance, theatre and exhibitions have been the order of the day at the Judy throughout August – a lovely combination to put some steps in our Spring, shake off the remnants of winter, and keep us thinking and talking about the environment.

One, and two, and three….

Expressions’ double season of The 5th Door and Memory was warmly received, and emerge program’s Double Feature fertilised the blooming of new writers, actors and plays. The Institute of Modern Art’s Grey Water exhibition, part of the Riverfestival, comments on and stimulates thinking about water (and the growing lack of it) by reflecting the different viewpoints of 11 local and international artists. Grey Water continues until October 6.

And go!

Our final Program for 2007 is out and about and available on our website. We hope you find it full of interesting, challenging and entertaining events and activities. Life is to be lived, so if something tickles your fancy, try it out!

Linda Neil’s inventive, tender and dream-like cycle of songs and visuals, The New Passion Club, kicks off our September program for one night only this coming Thursday. Directed by Annie Lee (Kransky Sisters), Linda performs live with John Rodgers and Crystal Hildred backed by spoken words, sound tracks and projections created by leading musicians and artists from Australia and around the globe.

Australia’s finest annual poetry festival, the Queensland Poetry Festival - Spoken in One Strange Word will tongue-tie and spellbind audiences over the weekend of 7 – 9 September with readings, performances, workshops and awards. For full program details, log onto: www.queenslandpoetryfestival.com

Last week we welcomed our 2007 Arts Queensland Judith Wright Centre Poet in Residence. Paul Durcan is an internationally published and acclaimed Irish poet with a string of awards behind him including the 1990 Whitbread Poetry Award and the 1995 Heinemann Award. Paul will help forge relationships between poets here and in Ireland and participate in a number of events including the Queensland Poetry Festival, Brisbane Writers’ Festival and a range of Queensland Writers Centre activities. Some of you may recall our previous Poets in Residence, Jacqueline Turner from Canada in 2005 and Louise Wallwein from Manchester in 2006. Paul will be with us until mid October.

One of Australia’s most outstanding flamenco fusion ensembles, Arrebato, hits the stage on Thursday 13. Critically acclaimed for their accessible, passionate and driving style, Arrebato use guitars, cello, double bass, saxophones, harmonica and mandolins to create contemporary flamenco with an intensely international flavour. Individually, the members of Arrebato have collaborated with luminaries such as Antonio Vargas, George Benson and Al Jarreau. Collectively, they’re sublime!

Aussie rock icon Ian Moss (founding member of Cold Chisel) will take audiences on a fabulous musical journey performing new songs and many of his classic hits. Get up close and personal with “Mossy” backed by an ensemble of over a dozen musicians. For two nights only on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 September.

Following previous booked-out seasons, The Judith Wright Centre and Ausdance Queensland present the fourth Bell Tower II series for the year featuring seguePICo. Bell Tower II reveals never-before-seen works by independent Brisbane choreographers and dancers developed with the support of Ausdance Queensland. Fresh new ideas in dance hit the floor on 19 and 20 September. Free, but bookings are essential.

Continuing our Syncretism series of sharp-end, mood-shifting electronica, Sunno))) founder Stephen O’Malley and Mego mastermind Peter Rehberg (aka Pita) engulf the Theatre Rehearsal Room in an intense, visceral and unforgettable soundscape on Friday 21 September.

Hot off the plane from their European tour, the iconic 2 Dogs Soundsystem headline an audio-visual trip to hip hop supported by a candy-bag of local and national Funk/DJ/DVDJ acts hosted by Tom Thum. This gig on Friday 21 September also launches local production company Sawtooth. Tickets are available from the Judith Wright Centre or from Butter Beats City and Valley stores (booking fees apply).

“…nothing less than sensational.” The first female winner of the UK’s Perrier Award, Barb Jungr, has been a leading chanteuse and driving force in European and American cabaret for over a decade. Interpreting songs by Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel, Jimmy Reed and Elvis Presley among others, The Sunday Times (UK) described Jungr as “Astute..simmering..intelligent.” Experience Barb’s magic on her first ever visit to Brisbane on Saturday 22 September.

Following their sell-out season in March this year, super sleuths Right Foot Down Productions return with a brand new season of sketch comedy in The Sexy Detective Show. Catch this infectious comedy extravaganza on 28 and 29 September.

The Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) has more courses on offer through September. Expressions Dance Company continue their weekly Community Dance Classes and C!RCA’s September/October Holiday Workshops get into full swing.

The recording of the ABC program Talking Heads continues in our Shopfront space. Look out for interviews with Renee Geyer, Bill Peach, Googie Withers, John McCallum and Bruce Beresford.
