The Judy has been revelling in an eclectic spectrum of sound and music over the past month, and it’s got her tapping her feet and shakin’ her hips.

What’s that noise?

Local jazz luminaries Misinterprotato launched their much anticipated third album before heading South on a national promotion tour, and resident ensemble Elision presented What Remains as part of the Queensland Music Festival.

Also part of the Queensland Music Festival, the 3rd Australian International Music Market (AIMM) attracted over 115 delegates to the Judy including musicians, agents and festival directors from Australia, the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and New Zealand. AIMM showcased 18 bands and musicians, helped develop relationships and cut deals. Many musicians working in jazz, electronica and Indigenous genres have scored gigs or are negotiating bookings for performances here and overseas. For example, Misinterprotato have been invited to perform at the highly respected Vilnius Jazz Festival in Lithuania, Topology look like performing at the prestigious Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in England, and Indigenous performer Tjupurru has been offered concerts in New Caledonia, Canada, New York, Miami and Korea.

Resident company C!RCA presented a sublime season of contemporary circus in by the light of stars no more. C!RCA returned recently from the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland where they received fantastic reviews for their show The Space Between. This work has also been nominated for an Australian Helpmann Award in the category of Best Visual or Physical Theatre Production. We hope they pull off the award and wish them all the best for their forthcoming tour to New Zealand and Columbia ahead of their 2008 tours to Belgium, Canada and the USA.

Everything But Alf Stewart was a wonderful sell-out show which gave people with an intellectual disability a great opportunity to work with professional artists to create and perform their own work.

The Bluegrass Spectacular went off with a bang and a banjo twang, despite the last minute cancellation of the headlining act. Not to worry – as a well-known Federal politician recently said, twice, “shit happens”.

AsiaLink ran a public information session about their artist in residency program, and the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) delivered a session on the ins and outs of copyright.

Our emerge program of new work by new artists and companies presented another Picnic Playreading where 5 new plays were read, debated, re-written, shot down and hailed. Emerge also presented Double Feature, two new theatre works by local playwrights developed here at the Judy through the emerge program.

The ABC program Talking Heads continued filming segments in our Shop Front space. During July they interviewed Todd McKenny and Peter Sculthorpe – a couple of Judy’s favourites, particularly Todd!

Community dance classes and training courses offered by expressions and AFTRS continued throughout July.

Turn it up!

Expressions Dance Company has started bumping-in their upcoming season of Maggi Sietsma’s The 5th Door, and it’s looking mighty good. The company will follow up with a season titled Memory presenting work by Natalie Weir and Cheng Tsung Lung.

Our September to December 2007 Program is peeling off the printing press as we speak. Chocabloc full of diverse events and experiences, it should hit your mailbox, coffee shops and our foyer from the 15 August. Check it out, there’s some really hot local, national and international stuff on. Some highlights include The New Passion Club, Queensland Poetry Festival, celebrated cartoonist Michael Leunig, 2 Dogs Sound System, Big Sound Music Summit, celebrated UK chansonnier Barb Jungr, the latest theatre piece by Kooemba Jdarra Aboriginal Performing Arts, and much more.
