July 2007 e-Newsletter
The Judy certainly had plenty of creative fuel to stoke the hearth throughout the chilly month of June.
Raking through the coals:
Resident company ELISION presented another of its sublime international commissions, Theatre of Dawn. Composed by Italian Maurizio Pisati, the work was influenced by ghosts that inhabit the snowy Alps bordering Italy, Austria and Switzerland – how apt for the season! Our Bell Tower II season of emerging dance continued with a great new piece by Lisa O’Neil, and a fabulous steamy night out was had by all at the The Fruit Tingle Cabaret. The remount of Underbelly showed us how work evolves and matures with time and reflection. Warren Miller’s Off The Grid action film took us back up the ski slopes and proved popular as ever, and the Syncretism series gig by San Franciscan Christopher Willits and local Daiji Igarashi was another warmly received sell out. Emerge’s workshop Wrighting a Play, helped spur the creative juices of emerging local playwrights, and the lovely contemporary dance work the machine that carries the soul by local independent company Phluxus finished to enthusiastic praise. The IMA’s current exhibition of works by James Angus and Mike Parr is in full swing.
Training courses by the AFTRS and C!RCA proved popular as ever. Creative development of Kooemba Jdarra's upcoming season at the Judy has commenced along with rehearsals for a significant Queensland Music Festival event. Oh, and the ABC show Talking Heads, continued shooting episodes in our Shopfront, so look out for interviews with Ross Wilson, Joan Kirner, Phillip Adams and many more. Phew, what a month – enough to raise a sweat!
Put another log on the fire Judy:
Come and beat the chill with the Winter Warm Up Middle Eastern Dance Concert this Sunday night featuring leading Egyptian belly dance teacher Aida Nour and dancers from Australia and New Zealand.
Starting next week is C!RCA’s latest work by the light of stars that are no longer. Fresh from a sell out season at the Sydney Opera House, this beautiful and haunting new work features a kaleidoscope of projected light, acrobatics, trapeze, tumbling and contortion and the music of Leonard Cohen, DJ Shadow, and MuM. The season begins July 3.
We welcome back Misinterprotato with the launch of their brand new album, Variations, at The Judy on Saturday the 7th. Get into the swing and catch this great local jazz act before they head to Sydney and Melbourne – and probably the world!
Emerge continues their fun and casual Picnic Playreadings also on Saturday the 7th. See, hear and contribute to new theatre by local writers hot in the making!
The Bluegrass Spectacular, presented by the Redlands Modern Country Music Club, presents a great line-up of artists from near and far, so restring your banjo, strap on ya’ guitar, and hoedown to the Judy on the 12th.
Everything But Alf Stewart is a show where adults with an intellectual disability work with professional artists to create unforgettable and life affirming experiences involving dance, poetry, comedy, circus, music and more. This show provides an important opportunity for people with amazing creativity to steal the spotlight and perform like their idols from Home and Away! One night only on 11 July.
The Queensland Music Festival and ELISION present What Remains, a driven and musically formidable collaboration between composers and virtuosi improvisers, Timothy O’Dwyer and John Butcher on 20 and 21 July. Prepare to be shaken, stirred, soothed and seduced.
The Australian International Music Market (AIMM), part of the Queensland Music Festival program, will present some of the best electronic, contemporary, jazz and Indigenous new music and artists around, bringing them together with leading Australian and international festival directors, agents and managers. Showcases held here at the Judy and down at the Brisbane Powerhouse are open to the public. Check out the full program and get a taste of the future.
Emerge presents their Double Feature series of new one act plays between 23 and 25 Oct. New theatre hot off the press and onto the boards.
Resident dance company Expressions, present the The 5th Door by Maggi Sietsma. Through movement, music and text, The 5th Door focuses on Bluebeard’s young wife Judith as she learns the dark secrets of her husband’s past. Jigsaw by Natalie Weir was performed by Expressions in New York in 1999 and China in 2002. Completing the season is the world premier of Memory by Cheng Lung from Taiwan, former member of the world renowned Cloud Gate Theatre.
The Institute of Modern Art’s programs continue throughout July with exhibitions by James Angus and Mike Parr. On the 5th, the IMA presents Night of the Curators chaired by IMA Director Robert Leonard – a must-hear for emerging and would-be curators. On the 12th, Rachel Kent, Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, talks about James Angus’ art. Complementing the AIMM program, the IMA is presenting two music/sound art events featuring Qua (Melbourne) and the Deadnotes (Brisbane) on the 25th, and Robin Fox (Melbourne) and Robbie Avenaim (Sydney) on the 26th.
Of course, if you’d rather get in and do it yourself, have a look at the dance and circus classes, youth arts programs, and film, television and radio training on offer by the Judy’s resident companies.
Kindling for the future:
The Judy’s September to December Program is now locked-in and with the designer. Full of head, heart and soul stimulating events from here and abroad covering poetry, contemporary music, classic rock, new plays, Indigenous theatre, circus, cabaret and dance – it should hit your mailboxes and local distribution points in mid August. Please look out for it and recommend it to your friends.
Thank you for your continuing patronage and I look forward to seeing you bask in the warm arts glow down at the Judy.
