June 2007 E-Newsletter
What a merry month of May we have had at the Judy with sellout seasons of My Friend The Chocolate Cake, Jeff Lang and all three dance seasons of Bell Tower II. These shows bring to 13 the number of sellout seasons so far this year; that’s nearly one third of all shows presented at the Judy!
Our co-production with Oscar Theatre Company, The Last Five Years, attracted significant media and community interest and generated a fantastic “buzz”, selling 83% of available tickets – an impressive result for this new local company and for a musical no less!
Featuring the largest gathering of Brisbane’s finest performers on the one stage you’re likely to see this year, The Siren’s Kiss, by Sven Swenson was also a great success – hilarious, incisive and a damn fun night out! A heart-felt thank you to all our patrons for showing such strong support for the Judy and the artists whose work we present.
Now we find ourselves in June – already! So on with the show……
Internationally-renowned resident company, Elision Contemporary Music Ensemble, presents their concert Theatre of Dawn on 1 and 2 June. This subtle and sensual theatre of the imagination is inspired by the spirits which inhabit the Alps between Italy, Austria and Switzerland. Composed by Italian Maurizio Pisati this is a refined aural expression of a snow-bound world.
Offering a completely different take on snow, Warren Miller’s latest Off the Grid adventure film guarantees a white knuckle, dare-devil ski adventure suitable for the whole family. The 225-foot cliff drops, big mountain skiing and monster avalanches are a knock-out! Playing 21 – 23 June.
Between 6 and 9 June, the Judy parts the pineapple curtain to present a night of dark, queer arts at their most alluring. Featuring a galaxy of young and sexy performers, The Fruit Tingle Cabaret, presented in association with Pride, reaches out to queer and non-queer communities to celebrate queer arts at their best. Please note that Simon Chan and his “Gaysian” adventure has replaced Ken Glanville. No other flava gives you that tingle! Recommended for 15+.
Underbelly smashes dance and theatre together in a vivid and visceral blend of autobiography and iconic mythology. Continuing the Judy’s focus on contemporary dance in May and June, this is the much anticipated return season of leading local choreographer/dancer Brian Lucas’ work. Season runs 13 – 16 June.
the machine that carries the soul by local dance collective Phluxus has been described as “beautiful in its simplicity and intensity.” Emotion is explored through physical movement. See this work for the first time as a full length piece following its highly commended development season at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The season runs 26 – 28 June.
The acoustic and electronic sounds which have defined the Room 40 Syncretism series continues on 21 June with Christopher Willits from San Francisco in this final Sound Logic Series concert. Supported by Daiji Igarashi, this concert is cutting edge sonic candy.
Continuing the Judy’s support for new work, the emerge team offers another action-based playwriting workshop on 23 June. Resulting plays will be eligible for production through emerge’s season of 10-minute plays. Limited entry, so book early on emergeproject@hotmail.com
Following the fantastic exhibition of works by Bill Henson and Chris Marker (finishing Saturday May 26), the IMA will shortly install an exhibition by James Angus. Coming out of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Sydney, these twisted, realigned and re-sized sculptures of everyday and recognisable objects highlight Angus’ consummate craftsmanship. Exhibition runs 2 June - 28 July.
Visit our website for full program details – there’s still plenty coming up at the Judy between now and the end of August. Look out for seasons by Expressions Dance Company, C!rca, Misinterprotato, emerge, Elision, the Queensland Music Festival, Australian International Music Market, Everything but Alf Stewart, and an international Bluegrass festival!
If sitting back and taking it all in is not enough for you, go to our website and check out the workshops, dance classes and training programs offered by resident companies Expressions Dance Company, C!rca and the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
The Judy team is busily finalising the September to December program, and we’re excited! Look out for the Queensland Poetry Festival, Aussie rock legend Ian Moss, Big Sound, Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts and much more.
Thanks again for your ongoing support and see you at the Judy soon.
