April 2007 E-Newsletter

Welcome to the post-Bunny newsletter. I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and severely over-indulged in Swiss chocolate and good company. Now it’s time to shape up and shake it off with some calorie-busting ear and eye candy direct from Judy’s own kitchen!

Entree:

Tonight, the Judy turns the lights down low and lets the ears come to the fore in this latest Syncretism/Sound Logic Series concert. Hear sound artist Taylor Deupree, direct from the US, perform a translucent and textured surround-sound “sculpture” that will transport and transfix audiences. Deupree will be joined by UK leaf label recording artist Qua (aka Cornel Wilczek), and local musicians Lloyd Barrett and Joe Musgrove in this very special event. Bring a pillow or bean bag to relax on!

On Friday and Saturday night, come and revel in the joyous grooves and beats of Gambian-born Jali Buba Kuyateh and his new band Diyaa Looloo, with special guest performances by Afrodizziact. With a soaring voice and astounding dexterity, Jali plays the West African kora and sings in a performance that will stir your spirit, nourish your soul, and leave you feeling damn fine!

For the more adventurous with a taste for avant breed sonics, come and check out the rock/electronica fusion of Melbourne’s Ionic, the hip hop montage of Sydney’s Cleptoclectics and local innovators Lost of Love – recently kicked off the Valley Mall stage for being too weird! This is an all-ages gig, so tell the kids.

On Friday 27 and Saturday 28 April, swing into the Judy and catch some red hot Australian jazz at the Valley Jazz Festival with the Scott Tinkler Quartet (featuring Paul Grabowsky on piano, Philip Rex on bass, and Ken Edie on drums) and the legendary Vince Jones.

Our local young Emerge creators are also busy packing their literary hampers for the Picnic Playreadings on Saturday the 14th and Poetry Picnic on Saturday 28 April. Get into it, have fun and help make new writing happen.

Go to our website for full details on these and other shows.

Main Course:

Our May – August 07 Program will hit the streets and be posted to our members in about a week. Look out for another round of stimulating and entertaining events encompassing dance, art installations, exhibitions, emerging theatre including a new play by Sven Swenson, some first-class chamber-pop, roots and jazz music, Japanese and American electronica, a bewitching little Off-Broadway musical, a sensational queer cabaret (15+), workshops and Queensland Music Festival concerts including some of the best Australian and Pacific Rim music under the banner of the Australian International Music Market. Full information will be available on our website and more Programs are available in our foyers – pick one up for a friend!

This next Program will focus sharply on Brisbane’s independent dance artists through main theatre productions and the free Bell Tower II showings presented in association with Ausdance Queensland. This is an important opportunity for local audiences and dance artists to gauge the state of play ahead of the World Dance Alliance Global Summit in Brisbane in 2008. Come and see what Brisbane dancers and choreographers get up to in the local dance halls, rehearsal studios, living rooms and laneways – right here at the Judy during May and August.

Kicking off the dance program is Mirage – an interactive and visually sumptuous labyrinth of illusion performed in a reflective pool amongst multi-dimensional projections. Devised and performed by the internationally-acclaimed local company Igneous, their latest work Mirage reflects on disability and phantom-limb experiences and was recently described in Real Time as, “an act of bravery, a gift, a deep reflection on human re-creative capacity.”

And now the desert:

March was another great month for us at the Judy with a number of outstanding and well-attended world music concerts. Indian santoor doyen Shivkumar Sharma and Indonesian contemporary gamelan group SambaSunda both left a strong and positive impact on their Brisbane audiences before heading off to Womad and New Zealand. The latest season by resident company Kooemba Jdarra of the Sam Watson play, The Mack, was beautiful and powerful – we look forward to more Kooemba in November. Our new theatre work series, Emerge, had another great short season with Con’s Spire, and contemporary, eclectic string quartet Four Play, slayed them in the aisles! Thank you for all your great feedback on these shows, it’s affirming and much appreciated.

Having just finished our report on the Judy and the activities of its resident companies in 2006, I’m delighted to tell you that attendances at performances, workshops, exhibitions and our bars increased by more than 30% between 2005 and 2006 to 123,000! It’s great to see so many of you taking advantage of the activities and facilities offered here - and buying about 25% more tickets in 2006 than the previous year! The Judy also presented 233 performances in the Theatre alone in 2006, that’s 51 performances more than in 2005. Thanks again for your continuing and growing support and patronage!

Come and burn off the Easter excesses and stock up on some great art and entertainment for the long hard road ahead. We hope you enjoy our new Program and upcoming events, and look forward to seeing you at the Judy soon.
