SAMBASUNDA Thu 8th March

The first ever co-presentation by two of Brisbane’s foremost venues; the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts and the Brisbane Powerhouse.

DEBUT AUSTRALIAN APPEARANCE FOR 17 INDONESIAN MUSOS

Direct from the heart of the rich Indonesian Sunda culture in Bandung (West Java), the 17 energetic musicians of SambaSunda aren’t afraid to raise a sweat performing their world-renowned brand of eclectic & mesmerising global fusion.

Already festival favourites throughout Europe, SambaSunda have stunned western audiences with their seamless blend of amazing speed-gamelan, thundering Afro djembe and sultry Samba rhythms. SambaSunda features traditional gamelan gongists, ably joined by suling flute, djembe, timbales, violin and more.

Their signature sound is united under the direction and composition of internationally famed multi-instrumentalist, Ismet Ruchimat (collaborator with Talvin Singh and Saba Habas Mustapha).

In a first ever co-presentation between the Judy and the Brisbane Powerhouse, SambaSunda are certain to stun with a not-to-be-missed Australian debut performance in Brisbane before touring on to WOMAD and New Zealand.

Praise for ‘The Sunda Music’:

‘SambaSunda have developed a mature sound that is distinctive and unique… I expect this album to be featured on many critics’ best of the year lists. Highly recommended.”
John Clewley – Bangkok Post

“Passionate, exciting and inspiring – hands moving too fast for the eyes to see… It’s like a marketplace of sounds winding up to the grand finale… these guys are hot, hot, hot.”
J Shelley – Indo-Arts Alliance
