SANTOOR JUGALBANDHI Wed 7th March
Shivkumar Sharma & Rahul Sharma (India)
“The audience sat entranced by Shivkumar... building to virtuosic ecstasy” The Advertiser
:: SANTOOR FATHER & SON DUO :: SPELLBINDING & SUBLIME ::
Recipient of the Indian President’s Padma Vibushan award, Shivkumar Sharma will spellbind Brisbane audiences with his sublime skills on the traditional Kashmir santoor. Trained by his father, Shivkumar will perform in Jungalbandhi with son and disciple Rahul Sharma; a-not-to-be-missed duet of heavenly melody between two virtuoso santoor musicians with rhythm accompaniment by Yogesh Samsi on tabla.
WOMAD veteran Shivkumar Sharma is world-renowned for masterfully conjuring sublime images of Kashmir with a complex web of haunting and hypnotic sounds. The santoor is a 100-stringed folk instrument from Kashmir originally used to accompany mystic Sufi music. To make the santoor suitable of breadth of classical Indian music, Shivkumar introduced a chromatic arrangement of notes and increased the instrument’s range to three octaves and developed a technique to sustain notes and maintain continuity.
With training in Tabla and vocals underlying Shivkumar’s beguiling ability to balance rhythm and melody, he describes the sound he is able to produce as “something like a whisper and a cascade of a waterfall. It creates romantic and pervasive moods in the listener.”
Exquisitely subtle and hypnotic, this is a very special one-off Brisbane performance of traditional Indian musical mastery live @ the Judy.
“He coaxed from the 100-string santoor the most beguiling melodies.” The West Australian
