March 2007 e-Newsletter
Welcome to March and another great month of events at the Judy featuring three outstanding international groups, the fantastic Australian quartet Fourplay, and a powerful new play by Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts written by the renowned Aboriginal activist and writer Sam Watson.
The Judy’s abuzz. Just before we get into March, I want to thank you all sincerely, on behalf of everyone here at the Judy, for the wonderful support and interest you have shown in our program throughout January and February. It’s been deeply rewarding to see such strong ticket sales across an eclectic and wide ranging series of events from Damo Suzuki, through Women in Docs and Dhafer Youssef, to The Necks and contemporary local acts Tara Simmons, Omega Red and Taste of Tea. The “Sold Out” sign went up for Kate Miller-Heidke, the new contemporary dance work absence(s) and now Irish folk maestros Lunasa. The Judy is really buzzing – thank you so much for making this happen.
More buzz. If you’re quick, you can catch the last night of the comic drama Con’s Spire by Errol Bray. Unusual and strange, Con’s Spire continues our Emerge series showcasing new theatre, writing, companies and artists. The season ends Thursday 1st of March.
On Wednesday 7 March we are honoured to present the legendary Shivkumar Sharma and Rahul Sharma in Santoor Jugalbandhi – a musical duel between father and son. Ranked alongside international luminaries such as Ravi Shankar and Amjad Ali Khan, Shivkumar Sharma will spellbind you with the beautiful and hypnotic 100-stringed santoor. Experience Santoor Jugalbandhi at the Judy before they appear at Womad, NZ Womad, in Melbourne and at the Sydney Opera House. A rare opportunity to see one of the most revered Indian musicians performing in Brisbane.
On Thursday 8 March, the 17 musicians of SambaSunda will perform in Australia for the first time. Based in Bandung West Java, SambaSunda perform a compelling and energetic fusion of traditional gamelan and Brazilian rhythm which has earned them rave reviews at festivals around the world. Created by Ismet Ruchimat (collaborator with Talvin Singh and Saba Habas Mustapha) SambaSunda will perform at the Judy before they jet off to Womad, Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand. We are pleased to present this first-ever joint concert with the Brisbane Powerhouse.
Performing original songs with influences as diverse as klezmer, tango, slide guitar and folk-tronica, Fourplay will take you on a rollicking musical journey that has taken them around the globe. Audiences at concert halls in Asia, British arts centres and Australian folk festivals can’t get enough of Fourplay and their highly skilled, exotic and unique sound. Catch them on Saturday 10 March following their sell-out season at the Sydney Opera House.
Resident company Kooemba Jdarra presents The Mack, a powerful new play by Sam Watson and directed by Ian Brown. Beautifully designed and staged, The Mack is about kinship and country, and about strength, struggle and spirit. The season runs from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 31 March.
Right Foot Down Productions, the winners of the 2006 BIFF Fast Film Award, bring you the latest installment of the outrageous sketch comedy The Sexy Detective Show 23-24 March. So come along, watch and laugh as the hilarity ensues.
Dont Forget! Due to unfortunate circumnstances The Ben Winkelman Trio performance has been scheduled to Saturday 26th May. Tickets on sale soon!
The Institute of Modern Art continues its exhibitions of photographs by New Zealander Yvonne Todd as well as Fresh Cuts, a selection of the best local work by recent graduates and post-grads.
If you’re not content to simply take in and enjoy great performances at the Judy, why not create your own! Go to our website and check out the workshops and classes being offered by Judy residents Expressions Dance Company, C!rca and the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
As we take a bit of a break from folk music during March, some of you may be interested in catching the much loved Judy favourites Leah Cotterell and Jamie Clark at the Mad Ass Folk Club in Annerley on Thursday 22 March. For full details go to www.madass.org
