absence(s) by Claire Dyson
absence(s) first stage of new contemporary performance
An unconventional new dance work by Clare Dyson and the Subject to Change Performance Collective exploring absence, abduction and desaparecidos
Externally situated to provoke the audience’s internal anxieties, absence(s) is an intense and innovative dance-theatre experience that delves in the spaces of what we have left behind and how we have chosen to leave it.
Acclaimed choreographer Clare Dyson and the independent Brisbane dance collective ‘Subject to Change’ (Avril Huddy, Brian Lucas, Vanessa Mafe-Keane and Tammy Meeuwiseen) present the first stage performance of a compelling contemporary dance piece, which draws its initial spark of inspiration from Dyson’s research into missing persons.
The site specific work is innovatively located and presented; the audience is literally taken on a journey through absence(s) in a work that powerfully deals with the subject matter of disappearance and abduction.
According to the International Commission on Missing Persons, 40,000 people went missing in Former Yugoslavia and between 1976 and 1983 up to 30,000 Argentineans were subject to forced disappearance under the military junta in power at the time.
“Another compelling, affecting work by Dyson that will stay with me for some time.” RealTime Arts
In 2006, ‘Subject to Change’ performance collective and Clare Dyson were both recognised for their Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance at the Australian Dance Awards; “For a work of rare and complex choreographic logic; a demanding and assured piece of dance theatre.” Lighting Design for absence(s) will be managed by Mark Dyson (brother), who has collaborated with Clare for the past eight years striving to “dissolve the barriers between movement and light in performance”.
absence(s) is set to be a moving, unique and not-to-be missed dance theatre experience.
Created by claire dyson in collaboration with performers avril huddy, brian lucas, vanessa mafe and tammy meeuwissen.
