December 2006/January 2007 e-news
To round out our 2006 program, the Judy presents A Tribute to the Blues Mamas featuring the incomparable Lil’Fi and Margret RoadKnight this Friday and Saturday night! Take a well-earned break, enjoy a cleansing ale and get into some classic blues. Their last show sold out and tickets are again selling fast – so book now!
On 12 December, Vulcana Women’s Circus kicks off their brand new show Strange Creatures – the culmination of an extended circus and theatre training program involving women from Brisbane’s deaf community. Strange Creatures is set in a subterranean laundry/laboratory where women investigate how the bio-technical age has opened boundaries and challenged ideas about parenting. You just never know what might come out in the rinse!
As an effective antidote to carols and chiming bells, immerse yourself in the unusual and detailed textures of UK sound maestro David Toop’s sonic experience on Thursday 14 December. This final Syncretism concert for 2006 also signals the close of our program for the year.
What’s Judy up to in 2007?
The first of our 2007 Programs is now peeling off the printer. With a colourful new look and full of new experiences, the January – April Program features sensational local, national and international contemporary performances, world music concerts by top-flight international artists and some of the best local talent around. We are very pleased to also announce the first-ever co-presentation with the Brisbane Powerhouse here at the Judy – the 17-piece contemporary Indonesian gamelan orchestra SambaSunda!
January - April Program highlights include: folk-pop divas Women in Docs; the national Aurealis Awards for sci-fi and fantasy literature; Tunisian nu-jazz master Dhafer Youssef; iconic Australian jazz wizards The Necks; the quirky and “poperatic” Kate Miller-Heidke; Irish folk superstars Lunasa, Indian santoor legend Shivkumar Sharma; the internationally renowned genre-bending FourPlay String Quartet; West African kora maestro Jali Buba Kuyateh and the Valley Jazz Festival.
The new Program will be distributed to our members via direct mail and generally through the Brisbane News in mid December. Look out for it and recommend it to your friends – it’s great!
Judy’s ABC
Shooting of the ABC program Talking Heads has started in Judy’s Shopfront space – right on Brunswick Street! Peter Thompson’s Talking Heads interviews with leading personalities, celebrities and arts stars extends the Judy’s presence over the airwaves through the great communication medium of our age - TV. So the next time you visit the Judy, rub shoulders with TV’s glitterati and the social A-set – just don’t trip over any Gold Logies!
