After a fruitful stay in Europe, one of Brisbane’s most celebrated musical sons, the multi award-wining pianist and composer, Sean Foran, returns to Brisbane for one night only with his latest collaborative musical offering – Vehere.
A truly international trio of world class musicians, Vehere, enjoys the musical musings of Belgian clarinet player, Joachim Badenhorst; the soaring harmonies of Norwegian vocalist, Kari Bleivik, and Foran’s own amazing virtuosity on piano. Performing for one night only on Saturday 19 December, the trio will perform a range of self-penned compositions drawing on the influences of Scandinavian folk music, a range of jazz styles, world music, contemporary improvised music and folk traditions.
The concert will feature a special guest performance by popular Brisbane duo Macklin & Newcomb. Vocalist Hannah Macklin and improvisational musician Steve Newcomb make up the duo well known for their original compositions, new takes on modern jazz and heavily layered pop.
The Vehere trio came together during Foran’s recent stay in the UK, where he was studying Masters in Jazz Performance at the Leeds College of Music. While studying at the College, Foran found himself working with celebrated ECM recording artist John Taylor and drew great inspiration from the rare and highly anticipated musical meeting.
Having formerly collaborated with Bleivik, Foran took the idea of a trio to Badenhorst, whom Foran had worked with previously at the Banff Workshop in Improvised Music in Canada. At their first session the three young musicians discovered a “unique chemistry” and the Vehere trio was born. Between them, the group has performed at large venues and major festivals around the world including the UK, Norway, Japan, Sweden, USA, Mexico, Canada, France, Belgium and Australia.
“Our music echoes the sounds of classic ECM releases but with a fresh approach,” Foran said, “We re-imagine the standards and work with gentle vocal melodies and emotive ballads. Our music has been described as haunting, mesmerising, and having the ability to captivate an audience.”
Foran is best known in Australia is the recipient of the 2009 APRA Professional Development Award (Jazz) and the winner of the QMusic Jazz ‘Work of the Year’ award in 2006 and 2008. Contemporary music enthusiasts will also be familiar with Foran’s work as a member of the popular jazz ensemble, Misinterprotato.
Vehere’s tour of Australia coincides with the release of their debut album, ‘Unravelling’, recorded in the UK in February of 2009.
